Like most Christians, I have found that God is beyond comprehension, and that any attempt to express the greatness of God is an exercise in futility. We often say “He is omnipotent, omnipresent, the greatest, most awesome, powerful, glorious, caring, loving, being known or unknown to man” and any other great words of expression we may think of, but then what?
Can anyone comprehend the one who knows the nucleus of every atom, and the number of grains of sand upon the earth; the one who knows all the stars and calls them by name? It’s possible to even catch a glimpse of the eminence of the one who spoke and the universe was formed, the suns began to circle their planets, plant and animal life came into being, and man was created?
And who can understand eternity? What was before the beginning of eternity? Yet He is eternal. “I am the Alpha and the Omega” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty” Rev 1:8. How do we aptly comprehend, fathom, and put into words the one that knew each and every one on us before the earth was created; the one who knows every sparrow, thought, and number of hairs in our head.
We can say with certainty that “He is amazing, indescribable, incomparable,” yet the fact remains that if we are truly to know him, He must make himself known to us.
Apart from God’s own self-disclosure we could not know him in any true sense. Human speculation is never sufficient. That is why we must be firmly rooted and grounded in God’s written word. Even though we cannot fully fathom or know the greatness of God, by creating us in his image and giving revelation of himself through his word, we can know him truly.
If there is one word in all of scripture that best describes our Great and mighty God, it is the word “love” 1john 4:8. “God is love”. God sent his only son Jesus, to give his life for us, thereby restoring the oneness of God and man, making it possible for us to approach his very throne; communicate, receive salvation, and spend eternity with him. John 3:16. “Greater love has no one than this that he lay down his life for these friends. “John 15:13. Jesus definitely laid down his life for us. So again, inadequate to describe the incomprehensible greatness of God, it seems appropriate to end by quoting from his word: “thy way, O God is holy. What God is great like our God”?
